Context

Cosmic undertook a survey at West Hill Court in early 2025. The resident group was looking for a shared EV facility for their community of over 80 properties to share as a number of residents had recently purchased electric cars.

With unallocated parking spread throughout the development a central location was selected to best serve the entire community as drivers would be able to park near the infrastructure when required and move away from it when their cars were full. It was important that the infrastructure remained subtle so as to not impede on what is a beautiful property located immediately adjacent to Hampstead Heath.

Activity prior to installation

Whilst on site during the survey Cosmic evaluated a number of potential charging locations and power supplies. This process involved balancing cost, driver convenience, site disruption and the aesthetic of the installation to ensure the best outcome for the development as a whole.

Cosmic then produced a comprehensive proposal along with detailed FAQs for the resident group to digest.

As existing capacity is constrained by other requirements in the property Cosmic have installed dynamic load management to ensure EV charging balances against other power requirements in the property in real time. Image below.

The installation

The installation itself was conducted over a 3 day period in early August. There were a number of complexities to navigate including a full review of the Asbestos risk register and the upgrade of an electrical supply cable to the main EV distribution board in order to ensure the clients expectations of 22kW chargers could be achieved.

The chargers themselves were mounted on the external wall of a plant room immediately adjacent to 5 parking bays. External wiring was kept to a minimum in order to reduce visual impact.

The resident experience

Residents are now able to share the EV charging facility among the whole community. With a high speed of charging and a relatively low average mileage per day due to the central London location Cosmic are confident that the facility as currently designed will be sufficient to provide convenient charging to all residents even as the adoption rate of electric vehicles continues to rise.

Drivers are benefiting from charging their car in the comfort of their own home for the first time and doing so at a price that is half that of the nearest publicly available infrastructure.

Grant

Cosmic were able to claim Government Infrastructure Grant funding of £3,700 for this installation as a result of 5 parking bays being wired (5x£500) and fully equipped (5x£350). The process was handled by Cosmic who held responsibility for the administration of the grant claim and submission of evidence.

Note: the grant is current due to run out at the end of March 2026.
