Grant funding unlocks for EV infrastructure at Grade II listed Leamington apartment complex

Context
The residents at Newbold Terrace had been working towards EV charging for several years. A motivated and well-organised resident committee kept the project alive through the challenges that so often cause similar initiatives to stall. Questions around power capacity, cost allocation, and how to fund the works which had been quoted at more than double the eventual price by other providers. With service charge reserves available to contribute to, but not fully fund, the project the fundamental commitment from the community was never in doubt. What was needed was the right partner and the right funding structure to make it viable.
Cosmic Charging was introduced to the development through Cannon Jones, the managing agents. Having assessed the site, Cosmic identified that the development was eligible for OZEV's EV Infrastructure Grant and that maximising this funding would be essential to making the project proceed.
Funding
The OZEV EV Infrastructure Grant provided over £14,000 towards the cost of the installation; funding that, in the words of those close to the project, made the difference between the project happening and it not. Whilst service charge contributions were available to bridge the gap, the grant was the piece that unlocked the scheme. Cosmic managed the entire grant application and evidence submission process on behalf of the development, removing the administrative burden from the property manager and residents entirely.
Survey
Cosmic conducted a detailed survey of the parking areas at Newbold Terrace, assessing viable cable routes, the existing electrical supply, and the optimal layout for both the current number of EV drivers and anticipated growth. A clear and comprehensive proposal was produced for the resident committee and Cannon Jones, along with guidance on grant eligibility, expected costs, and the resident sign-up process.

The installation
More than 20 parking bays were equipped with the cabling, distribution infrastructure and smart charging hardware needed to support individual EV chargers over the projects’ 3 week installation.
Works included coordinating with the local DNO (National Grid) to install a new supply (see image of these works partially completed).
The Cosmic team coordinated the DNO, new meter installation and wider ground and electrical works so that timings aligned closely and the total project duration was kept to a minimum.
Resident experience
Four residents have already committed to having chargers installed on day one, with their moves to electric vehicles planned in the coming months. The infrastructure is now in place to serve the whole community as EV adoption continues to grow meaning future residents will never face the years-long wait this committee had to endure.
Residents at Newbold Terrace can now look forward to charging at home conveniently, affordably, and without the uncertainty faced by other developments yet to make the move to invest in EV infrastructure.
